The Team
Nursing & Therapy Team
We place the patient at the centre of their rehabilitation programme. This means that the different team members involved in each programme work together with the patient to achieve their goals for rehabilitation. This is known as Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) working.
Rehabilitation Nurses
The nursing team is led by a Modern Matron with each floor having its own ward Sister and team of nurses that work across shifts to provide you with 24 hour care. Daily handover between nursing shifts ensures the seamless continuity of your care.
The rehabilitation nurses will carry out an assessment of your needs when you are admitted to the unit. Following this assessment a plan of care is compiled to ensure that these needs are met on a daily basis.
The nursing team specialises in rehabilitation including pressure area management and bowel and bladder management. They also provide support and education to assist you and your family in adjusting to any change in your functional abilities. The nursing team is skilled in helping you to incorporate specific techniques learnt in therapy sessions into your daily routine to maximise your recovery and independence.
Neuropsychology is a branch of clinical psychology that aims to identify and understand changes in thinking and behaviour that can result from injuries to the brain.
Physiotherapists are concerned with retraining movement and function. Physiotherapists assess muscle strength, joint range, sensation, coordination and balance and analyse how these affect your mobility and function. Generally treatment is aimed at the management of spasticity, improving strength and coordination and improving the voluntary control of movement through the use of therapeutic activities and exercises. The Physiotherapy team has a broad range of skills and use an evidence based treatment approach.
Occupational Therapists work with you and your family to help you to return to activities of daily living and improve your independence and quality of life.
Following admission a comprehensive assessment will be carried out to identify your abilities and any limitations in participation in your personal care, work and leisure routines. The therapists will address your functional needs with a variety of treatment techniques based on research. Education and advice will be provided as required regarding adaptive equipment and environmental adaptations that may assist you to return home and participate in your regular activities.
Speech and Language Therapy is the assessment, diagnosis and management of communication and/or swallowing difficulties.
Speech and Language Therapy aims to enable people to communicate or swallow to the best of their ability. Following comprehensive assessment, your Speech and Language Therapist will work with you to determine the best treatment to address your specific needs. This often involves individual therapy, and includes advice and support. Your Speech and Language Therapist will also provide education for family members and carers on how they can optimise your communication and swallowing function.
Therapy Assistants
Therapy assistants work within the physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy departments. They work closely with your therapists to help you make the most of your time both in and out of therapy sessions. They are involved with many of the group sessions that we offer. They may also see you for additional one to one treatment sessions if this is felt to be necessary.
Dietitians provide you with advice and education to you, your carers and the clinical team with regards to your nutritional needs.
Rehabilitation Advisors
The Rehabilitation Advisors work alongside the clinical and admissions team and are available to answer any clinical enquiries relating to referral and admission.
They also complete pre admission assessments for any patients referred from within the UK. The aim of these assessments is to establish the aims for the admission, the estimated length of stay and to ascertain any special requirements for the admission.
Interpreters
Our team of medical interpreters work closely with the patients, their families and the treating team throughout the admission to help with all aspects of the rehabilitation programme.
They are also able to translate written documents so that copies of goals, exercise and education programmes, meeting minutes and reports are available in the patients primary language.
