Spinal Injuries

The spinal cord is a collection of nerves which connects the brain to the rest of the body. The spinal cord carries motor messages from the brain to control movement and sensory messages.

When the spinal cord is damaged (either through trauma, reduced blood flow etc) people have difficulty moving and feeling body parts. An injury to the spinal cord in the lower back can cause sensation and movement problems in the legs, while an injury closer to the neck can affect both arms and legs. Spinal cord injuries can have a profound impact on people's lives. The Wellington Hospital offers a multidisciplinary approach to maximise functional independence, offer emotional and family support and facilitate return to previous life roles as much as possible.
